MISSION: The prevention of youth suicide, addiction and bullying, through social/emotional arts integration residencies
VISION: A world where every voice is heard and honored
VALUES: A fun, safe, creative, and nurturing educational environment where all are truly welcome
The UBU Project is a 501c3 arts education outreach organization,
providing social/emotional arts integration learning via week-long residencies for:
K-12 schools
Teen centers
Faith communities
Juvenile detention facilities
Institutions of higher learning.
We also provide:
Professional development seminars
Masterclasses
Live performances
Keynote addresses.
UBU residencies utilize music, movement and theater to introduce, support and enhance social/emotional learning, safe and healthy student programs as well as diversity, equity and inclusion curricula.
UBU Project Pedagogy
Our pedagogy comes from "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran:
"The greatest teachers lead their students to the threshold of their own wisdom."
The UBU Project also takes great inspiration and wisdom from these words:
"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree it will live its life believing it is stupid."
The UBU Project is dedicated to leading students along an interactive journey of self-discovery.
This is achieved through a process based upon the principles of Socratic Seminar which are:
Student-Led
Project-Based
Goal-Oriented
Arts-Infused
UBU SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL LEARNING CURRICULUM
The UBU Project's social/emotional and diversity equity & inclusion curricula is based upon what we call The UBU Treasure Chest as taught through one-week, arts integration residencies:
Hope | Esperanza
Resilience | Resistencia
Self-Compassion | Auto-Compasion
Empathy | Empatia
Students of all ages quickly discover that their UBU Treasure Chest can be found in their own heart.
The UBU Project's DIVERSITY EQUITY & INCLUSION CURRICULUM
Builds on these treasure chest words by including a focus on engaging and celebrating our similarities and differences by looking at individual, group and community intersectionality through an equity lens of "I am" and "I choose to be" statements. Through this interactive, co-creative process the students learn what unique gifts they bring to the class and what commonalities connect them with their classmates, teachers and neighbors.
UBU Arts Integration Curriculum
Much like the Saturday morning cartoon Schoolhouse Rock™, UBU Project Arts Integration Residencies utilize performing arts skills and curricula to introduce, support and enhance the work already being in your classrooms and after school programs. The exciting difference with UBU Project Arts Integration Residencies is that: all the lyrics and text are created by your students!
Each student’s deeper understanding of the four “treasure chest words” is the topic of an ongoing, week-long, interactive discussion which leads to the students creating their own original song, poem and/or spoken word pieces. The structure of the student writings is based upon the guiding principles of Shakespeare's Elizabethan Sonnets,
Each verse has four lines
Each line has ten syllable-beats
Each verse follows an alternating rhyme scheme
Cross-curricular learning:
“Music is math that you can hear” (Math)
“Songs are Stories that you sing” (Language Arts)
*NOTE: All UBU Project curriculum and pedagogy support the ADE/CASEL SEL State Competencies
while also addressing certain tenants of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).
